2. Why Tile Wastage Happens — and Why It Varies

Every tiled installation generates waste tiles — cut pieces that are too small to use or discarded at room edges and around obstacles. The amount of waste is determined by four specific factors: room geometry, layout pattern, tile format, and the number of obstacles. Understanding these factors is what separates an accurate tile order from a costly guess.

Room Geometry

Square rooms with straight walls generate the least waste. L-shaped rooms, rooms with alcoves, columns, and irregular angles all require more cuts and produce more off-cut waste. The more complex the plan, the higher the waste factor.

Layout Pattern

A straight grid is the most material-efficient. A diagonal layout cuts every tile at 45° at every edge, producing triangular off-cuts that cannot be reused. Herringbone requires the most cuts of any common pattern.

Tile Format

Large-format tiles (60x120cm and above) produce more waste at edges — a 60x120cm tile cut to fit a 30cm gap wastes half the tile. A 30x30cm tile cut the same way wastes only one tile out of four.

Number of Obstacles

Each door, window, column, socket, and fitted unit requires cuts around it. A kitchen with many outlets and alcoves produces dramatically more waste than an open-plan living room of the same area.

Multiply length by width: Length × Width = Gross Area (ft²). Multiply by 0.0929 to convert to m².

6. How to Calculate Grout Quantity

Grout quantity depends on tile size, joint width, and tile thickness. A 5mm joint on a small mosaic requires dramatically more grout than a 1mm joint on large-format porcelain.
