Every tiled installation generates waste tiles — cut pieces that are too small to use or discarded at room edges and around obstacles. The amount of waste is determined by four specific factors: room geometry, layout pattern, tile format, and the number of obstacles. Room Geometry
Square rooms with straight walls generate the least waste. L-shaped rooms, rooms with alcoves, columns, and irregular angles all require more cuts and produce more off-cut waste. The more complex the plan, the higher the waste factor.
Layout Pattern

The Complete Tile Quantity Formula
Calculate gross room area
Multiply length by width: Length × Width = Gross Area (ft²). Multiply by 0.0929 to convert to m².
Subtract deductions
Remove fixed elements that don't need tiling — doors, windows, wardrobes, cabinets: Gross Area − Deductions = Net Tile Area
Apply waste factor
Add correct waste percentage for your layout: Net Area × (1 + Waste%) = Order Area. Example diagonal: Net × 1.18
Add contingency stock
Add 5–10% for breakage and batch matching: Order Area × (1 + Contingency%) = Final Order Area
Convert to tile count

Convert to boxes — always round UP
